3 weeks - 4 weeks -

Momma decided to wean them this week.  People often ask me "when do you wean them?" The answer is "I don't!  Their mother does."  Once they get their sharp teeth, she either runs away from them or puts their whole head in her mouth as a gentle correction.

When I notice her less willing to nurse, I begin to introduce some easy to eat foods.  My specialty is "Chicken Smoothie."  Allthough I do feed grain based dog foods also, I do not believe that they are capable of providing the high quality protein that I want for them as they grow so rapidly.

I start with whole chicken backs - as they are nearly a balanced diet unto themselves - and then add whole milk and egg.

Then Blend !!

Then sometimes I'll add a can of Alaskan Pink Salmon.  After a week I blend a chicken liver into the mix for one or two feedings per day.  It's so good for them, but too rich to give them very much.

Let the feeding frenzy begin!

Notice how the pups at the bottom are pushing to their left.  After another minute they were all pushed left.  I can't explain this phenomenon with this litter, but they seem to do it every time I feed them.  They seem to want to form a counterclockwise spiral!  I wonder if they would spiral the other direction if we lived in the southern hemisphere?

Unfortunately my heavy duty blender burned out - apparently not strong enough to grind hundreds of chicken backs.  Since I don't want to spend several hundred dollars on a Vita-Mix (the preferred blender of raw feeding elitists) I bought a 1000watt meat grinder with good raw feeder reviews from Northern Tool.  I'll take some pics of it next time.
