Magnolia White Shepherds is a small family kennel devoted exclusively
to developing and promoting the White Shepherd. I (Dale Malony)
have
been married to the warm and gracious Laurie for almost 10 years as of
Jan. 2005. We have 2 precious young girls - Sarah Joy (age 5)
and
Jessica Grace (age 2). Laurie stays home with the girls, and I
work 2nd
shift for Honda of America Mfg.
White Shepherds have been a passionate hobby of mine for over 4 years
now. You can read about my beginnings in this hobby in the first article
I wrote for the UKC Bloodlines magazine.
I gave up golf for this hobby - something that I could do more at home
and with my family and still be supremely challenged by.
Sarah is learning to show dogs and Diana, of Von Tasz, is now known as
"Aunt Diana" to her. It gets the judges attention when suddenly a
pumped up 5 year old bursts into cheer - "GO DIANA !! GO DIANA !!...
"as
she runs the ring. Cheering sections are rare at such
events. Of course, I get an enthusiatic, "GO DADDY !! GO
DADDY !! GO DADDY !!". Sarah is maybe the most enthusiatic
child on this planet.
Sky
(above), is our first White Shepherd - a very muscular and athletic
girl more like a linebacker than a dancer. Sky - also a great
mother - whelped her first litter of 8
puppies in June 2004, one of which I fell so in love with that I could
not get myself to part with him. He is "Steel Man in Black" -
call
name "CASH" - in tribute to Johnny Cash: The Man in Black.

Cash
is proving to be every bit as wonderful as I sensed he'd be. He
is
already taller than his mother at only 8 months. I expect him to
weigh
about 100 lbs and to be one of the more masculine looking male
Shepherds I've seen. He is deep chested, broad shouldered and I
expect
his head to fill out quite impressively as it was broader than the rest
of the pups in his litter, all of which also had good heads.
One of the most
common questions I hear is "Are White Shepherds good with
children?". A simple answer - well bred ones are. Read my
article - "White Shepherds and
Children" - to get a much more involved answer.
The picture
at left shows my 2 year old daughter ,Jessica, with Cash and I on
Christmas morning. So long as he doesn't chew her toys, she loves
him. Jessica is the tenderhearted one of the two. She's as
gentle as Sarah is rough, and she's the one who cries her eyes out when
each pup goes home with it's permanent family.
Cash has one significant disadvantage from the
perspective of a breeder - he's a boy. A male is not an asset to
a small breeder, especially considering that it will be years before
I'll have enough genetic information about him to decide whether to
breed him.
I needed to add another female - which I plan to do
every 2-3 years. We bought "Emma" from Ronda Beaupre of Regalwise in Kansas. Emma is a product of Ronda's long term project to improve White Shepherd
temperament by crossing to Schutzhund titled dogs and selecting for
outstanding temperament in each generation. Emma is noticeably
spunkier than average and obviously confident. I've hammer
drilled through concrete next to her and she doesn't flinch - in fact,
she's fascinated by it. I LOVE her personality.
